The inspiration for this video was a book entitled Still Life, edited by Diane Keaton and Marvin Heiferman (Calloway, New York, 1983). This beautiful book contains photographs of stills and publicity shots of films produced in Hollywood between 1940 and 1969. All possess a fantastic, super-real quality, reproduced very accurately in the Pulp video. Many of the scenes in the video reproduced specific stills, substituting members of Pulp for actors. (Thanks to the official for this info.)
Left: South Pacific (Twentieth Century Fox, 1958). Right: Ocean's 11 (Warner Brothers, 1960).
A censored version of the video was prepared, known as the 'kids version' on promotional tapes. This replaces the word 'bitch' in the opening dialogue ("I'll tell you the unwritten rule, you dumb son-of-a - ") with a cutaway to a rolling film effect. The Vimeo version that is widely available online is the kids version, whilst the version released on the Hits DVD is unedited.
