Info

"Something Changed" is the fourth and final single taken from the album Different Class, released with two different sleeves (a "boy" and "girl" version), but with identical tracklistings.

It is also their fourth consecutive top ten single, peaking at #10 in the UK Singles Chart.

The song was included on the compilation Hits in 2002.

The B-side, Mile End appeared on the Trainspotting soundtrack album.

Pulp later worked with Roisin Murphy from Moloko; she contributed a cover version of Sorted for E's & Wizz which was released as a b-side to Bad Cover Version in 2002.

The live version of F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E. from Brixton Academy was also released on the F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.I.V.E. video in 1996.

According to the fanclub newsletter (issue 14 in early 1996), the band were considering either Something Changed or F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E. for single release.

Notes

Something Changed runs fractionally faster on the CD single than on the Different Class album (by 0.4 seconds), likely just a consequence of being transfered from analogue tape masters. It fades to complete silence at the end, where the album has some background noise.

Commentary

The release of the digital EP in 2023 was heralded by the following commentary from Pulp's social media accounts, believed to have been written by Mark Webber:

Life could have been very different but then ‘something changed’.

The last single drawn from the “Different Class” album was thoughtfully made available with different “Boy” and “Girl” covers, but they each contained the same four tracks.

“Mile End” was recorded during the LP sessions and appeared in Danny Boyle’s film “Trainspotting” (and its soundtrack). Moloko remixed the album track “F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E.” and a live version of the same song was recorded live at Brixton Academy during the Christmas 1995 concerts that were documented in the film “F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.I.V.E”. (Can you see what we did there?)

After Pulp had finished touring and taken a well deserved rest, Russell Senior left the band and we embarked on a new project, writing the songs that were to become “This is Hardcore”.
