Lyrics

This used to be a garden
now it's a national tragedy
Oh, lady of glasshouses
where is the flower
that will cover the stench of the city?
Well, it's lying in tatters
amongst cellophane wrappers
And I have to get out of this nursery
Yeah, that would be a first for me
And maybe I will find her
and lay down beside her
in fields of green and wait for the rain

This used to be a forest
now it's a whiskey distillery
Oh, lady of glasshouses
where is the drink
that will bring back my senses to me?
Well, I searched for the tree
that she mentioned to me
But it's no good
'cos they all look the same
You see I never learnt the names at school
And maybe I'll find her
and lay down beside her
in fields of green and wait for the rain

This used to be a playground
now it's your grandfather's nursery
Oh, lady of glasshouses
show me the plant
that I can bring back my true love to me
Well, she sailed down the river
now I long to go with her
I must find her
before she reaches the sea
Oh, it's the end for me
Oh, maybe I'll find her
and lay down beside her
and plant a seed and wait for the rain

And here comes the rain

Notes

  • The version on the 100% Sinnamon compilation appears to be sourced from an MP3, as it has a very limited frequency range (though still greater than the 128kbps Amazon release) and is not CD quality. It is clearly the same demo, but there are some noticeable differences: firstly, it is missing half a second from the beginning (it starts abruptly in the middle of the first note); it sounds subtly remixed, with greater prominence given to the synth strings and glass harmonica (particularly from 2:30 onwards), though this could be a result of the Amazon version being so heavily compressed; and it plays approximately 3% faster, with the track noticeably higher-pitched than the Amazon version. This actually sounds more natural and raises the possibility that the Amazon MP3 was slower/lower-pitched than it should have been.
